As colonial groups created settlements, different musical cultures began to emerge.  However, these musical cultures are not limited to geographical areas, nor are they limited to groups of settlers.

Without identifying some of the diverse peoples and their musical heritage we would miss a significant part of the story. This section will seek to identify the musical traditions of various cultural groups in Colonial America, including instruments used, characteristics of the music, and its purpose (spiritual, recreational, etc).
